Postdoctoral researcher

Basavaraj Kovi

Basavaraj Kovi is a postdoctoral researcher in the Plant Science Program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He joined the Krattinger Lab in August 2024. His research focuses on adult plant resistance to rust diseases in wheat to support the development of cultivars with durable disease resistance.

He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Bioscience from Kyoto University, Japan, where he investigated genetic resistance in rice to the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. He also holds an M.S. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, and a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, India.

His work integrates plant genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics to understand complex disease resistance traits at the whole-plant level. He aims to leverage adult plant resistance to develop resilient cereal varieties that perform reliably under field conditions and contribute to sustainable food production.
